Baking

:: Go Sports! ::

Hey, did you know that there was a huge sporting show down last night? I heard there was some great sport during it, and it’s a shame if you, oh I don’t know, watched episodes of Last Man Standing instead.

In case you didn’t catch the subtleness of disdain in that last sentence, I really don’t care much for sporting endeavors. If it’s your thing, cool, everyone has a hobby and things they enjoy. For me it is making cakes to look like footballs rather than watch people get over paid to throw it around.

That being said, our church hosted a super bowl party after evening service. We were asked to bring a dish to pass, and of course I had to make cupcakes. Any opportunity to bake and not have 30+ mini delicious cakes in my house and I am all over it.

A few years ago I made similar cupcakes for my college groups homecoming tailgate where they invited alumni. It was my first big batch of cupcakes, and while they were good, I was still learning and still using a typical american style buttercream. Nothing wrong with that, it’s just a bit heavy. I will say that for those cupcakes I had more designs because while I don’t care much for the sport, I still bleed green!

For these cupcakes I did a half batch of vanilla and chocolate cake, as well as half batches of vanilla and chocolate buttercream. Classic and simple allowing for double vanilla, double chocolate, and vanilla chocolate variations.

Instead of choosing a side and designing team inspired cupcakes, I stuck to turf and footballs. The footballs are so much fun to make and I probably could have piped them all day.

Because I didn’t have enough green colored buttercream, I only had enough to make one set of yard lines. So with the remaining turf I wanted to spell out Go Sports. An inside joke that was part of our college days and my score keeping for Joseph’s softball team. Unfortunately I still didn’t have enough to completely use all turf and settled on football end pieces.

They were a hit and my fellow ‘not committed to sports’ friends loved them.

As for normal day to day life, not much has changed. We are hosting one of our churches community groups at our home and it has been fun getting to know our new church family. Jethro had a major growth spurt/teething stage where I swear I wasn’t going to come out of it alive. Just when I thought I couldn’t take anymore of the 2am, 4am, 7am wake up calls, he settled and now only wakes up at 6:30am. For a while I thought we had taken on another newborn pup! Sometime this week or next, I’d love to film a little “Day in the Life of Jethro” for all of you, incase you are curious as to what I do all day, and what it is like having an 18 week old Siberian Husky.

Definitely happening this week are red velvet cupcakes for valentines day with a mini cupcake bouquet display tutorial. I’m shooting to have that post up this Thursday at the latest, sooner if I can swing it. And yes, hold me accountable to that!
